Bathroom Machineries Solid Wood Seats.
(A.K.A. the quest for a quality wood toilet seat)

The Toilet Seat Saga: A few years ago, the company we purchased our wood toilet seats from went out of business. We purchased all of the defunct company’s huge inventory of seats and seat blanks and began finishing the seats ourself. Unfortunately, (or perhaps fortunately for us, depending on how you look at it), we sold our way through this supply of wood seats in fairly short order. As demand for an alternative to those $20 “Depot Cheapo” wood seats grew, we found ourselves scrambling to buy or build a quality seat. The quality seats we manufacture today are the results of years of trial and error and searching for sources of materials that are up to our stringent standards.

Finding quality wood seemed to be impossible until we discovered a company in Oregon that could provide absolutely flawless clear lumber in the two thickness and 8 different species that we need. Due the way our seats are made, over 3 board feet, (about $50 worth) of perfect kiln-dried lumber is needed to make a single seat:

in less-expensive seats, the seat is assembled from four 1x6” slats glued together in a square. This saves lumber but results in a seat that has the grain running crossways in the front and back of the seat. Our seats are cut from a single joined slab of wood with all the wood grain running parallel. The result is an extremely strong seat that won’t crack or split at the joints.

The wood slabs are sent to a local wood shop where they are cut in a computerized CNC milling machine.
The resulting blanks are stored in a humidity controlled environment and are stained and finished as needed. The slightest crack, flaw, or worm hole is enough to cause us to reject a seat as unsuitable for sale.

Finished blanks are sanded, hand stained, and then allowed to sit for 24 hours. Any stain that bleeds out is wiped down and the seat is again allowed to cure.
After curing, the seats are sprayed with 2 coats of conversion varnish giving it that hard clear finish. The extra care in applying the finish results in a deeply lusterous sheen that brings out all the richness and depth of finish you’d expect in a piece of fine furniture.

But wait! The seats aren’t done yet: they still need hinges. We use our forged brass seat hinge that’s a reproduction of a 1920’s original. We offer them in 7 different finishes to match any decor. Only Brass or Stainless Steel are used in the hinge attachments so there will never any problems with corrosion.  The finished hinges are then fitted to the seats by hand to eliminate any alignment problems that might be caused by variations in the casting of the hinge parts.

Done! The resulting toilet seats really are fine furniture, suitable for the finest homes yet durable enough to justify using them anywhere. We didn’t plan on becoming toilet seat manufacturers but given the nature of our business, we felt we should offer a seat that matches the quality of the rest of our items. Honestly, we don’t make much
(if any) profit on these, but the pleasure we get out of crafting a superior product makes it worthwhile.
